Reviews are SO hard to get!

Astronomicon: The Beginning cover 3DI don’t have any figures comparing the rate of reader reviews between genres, but I can report from personal experience that getting readers to write a brief review of science fiction novels isn’t easy. My readers are more than happy to send me an e-mail, write a PM on Wattpad or Twitter etc., but persuading them to write a review (even a few words would do) on Amazon is another matter.

I’ve been preaching the line of “don’t tell me, tell everyone else” for months now, but it’s still not making much headway. I am extremely pleased to be able to report that Astronomicon: The Beginning has received nothing lower than 5-star reviews on Amazon.co.uk since the latter end of 2016 and the same on Amazon.com since July 2017. It looks like that last revamp of the novel really paid off – and it’s still FREE on both sites!

These consistently higher reviews have pushed my rating up to 4.3 stars out of 5. I’m very pleased with that.

My quest for the rest of 2018 is to find new and better ways to encourage my readers to post more reviews on Amazon. If I could just get 5% to post reviews I would more than double my total reviews in a month.

Maybe, when Behemoth is released on Amazon in a couple of month’s time, I should offer free copies to anyone who reviews one of my novels on any of the Amazon sites?

Astronomicon: The Beginning FREE #scifi on Wattpad

Astronomicon: The Beginning cover 3DHaving launched a new edition of Astronomicon: The Beginning on Amazon a few weeks ago, I am pleased to announce that the re-edited and longer version is now available on Wattpad too. It features all the same improvements: updated descriptions, improved dialogue, latest proofreading, fleshed-out characters and more up-to-date terminology (the original was written 20+ years ago!).

Now I’m free to focus my writing efforts on Behemoth. With a little luck, I’ll have that complete within two weeks. If so, five weeks later, after they have appeared on the RadishFiction app, the final chapters will be appearing on Wattpad.  My next planned project is Astronomicon 4, but that’s going to take a while to write.

I would still love to write full time. It would allow me to produce two to three novels per year but for now, I have to fit writing in around work and family, so you’ll all have to wait! I am working as fast as I can but available time is very limited.

Anyway, if you haven’t already read Astronomicon: The Beginning on the Wattpad’s website or their massively popular mobile app, here’s the link:  Astronomicon on Wattpad.

Hiccup with Behemoth

UBehemoth Book Cover version 1.2nfortunately, due to a rule change at RadishFiction, there’s going to be a sizeable delay in posting future chapters of Behemoth. Under their new system, chapters are locked (cannot be edited/corrected/deleted) just seven days after posting. It usually takes around 2-3 months before every error has been found and I am not prepared to e-mail RadishFiction admin with every error or change.

The alternative is to ignore errors on Radish and let it fall out of sync with versions on Wattpad and Amazon, which will continue to be corrected as usual. This is unacceptable to me and unfair to readers as it degrades their experience and if the different versions no longer match it makes it more difficult for readers to transition from one system to another.

I already have a lot of details to manage, without having to explain every little change in an e-mail to RadishFiction and hope that whoever performs the change for me doesn’t get it wrong. By my current calculation, I would be sending RadishFiction somewhere between two and five e-mails per day. I simply don’t have time for that and I doubt they do either.

From now on my new chapters will have to go through my full two-month long proofreading and editing process (using my trusty team of proofreaders) before I post them on Radish. Wattpad will continue to update as usual for a couple of weeks and will then suffer the same delay. I apologise for this and really wish it could be avoided.

New chapter of Behemoth (#scifi novel) out today

I’m pleased to announce that everything is still very much on schedule with Astronomicon: Behemoth and I’ve posted another chapter today. It’s hard work writing (editing, proofreading, polishing etc.) a new chapter every week while working a full-time job and raising my three kids. Definitely a new challenge for me, but it’s forcing me to write more regularly and in a slightly different style – both things that are good experience for me.

The only problem I’m running into is that the story may well prove to be too big for a single novel. After reassessing my planning notes, I am strongly considering splitting the story into three novels. I believe that would work better than one VERY large novel.

Don’t miss out! – See Behemoth on Wattpad (Chapters 1-14) or on the RadishFiction app (Chapters 1-20) on your Android or iOS device.
